Your TV screen has gone dark, or you see strange lines running across it. Someone told you the panel is gone and you need to spend thousands on a replacement. But wait — is it really a panel problem, or is it just the backlight? This difference can save you a lot of money.

Many repair shops in Delhi quickly tell customers that their TV panel is damaged because panel replacement is an expensive job. But in our experience at Repair Tronics, more than 60% of "dead screen" complaints are actually backlight failures, which cost much less to fix. Let us explain how you can tell the difference.

What is the Backlight?

Every LED TV has a set of small LED lights behind the screen. These lights are called the backlight. They light up the display so you can see the picture. Think of it like this — the panel creates the image, and the backlight makes it visible. Without the backlight, the screen looks completely black even though the TV is actually working.

Backlight LEDs can fail over time due to power surges, heat, or just normal wear and tear. When even one LED strip in the series fails, the entire backlight can go dark.

What is the Panel?

The panel is the actual display screen of your TV — the glass and layers of liquid crystal or LED pixels that create the picture you see. When the panel is physically damaged (cracked, hit by something, or has internal pixel failure), it produces visible defects like coloured lines, large dark spots, or a completely shattered display.

Let us put this in perspective with a real example. A customer came to us last month with a 43-inch MI TV. The screen was completely black but sound was working fine. Another shop had told him the panel was gone and quoted Rs 7,000 for replacement.

We diagnosed it properly and found that just 3 LEDs in one backlight strip had burned out. We replaced the full strip for Rs 2,200 including labour. The TV is working perfectly now. That is a saving of Rs 4,800 — almost 70% less than what he was originally quoted.

This happens very often. Here is why backlight repair is almost always the better choice when it applies:

• Cost: Backlight strips cost Rs 200–800 depending on the TV size. Panel costs Rs 2,000–6,000 for the part alone.
• Time: Backlight repair is done in a few hours. Panel replacement might take a day or two since the panel needs to be sourced.
• Risk: Backlight replacement is a straightforward repair with high success rate. Panel replacement carries slightly more risk if the replacement panel has quality issues.
• Longevity: Good quality replacement backlight strips last 3–5 years easily.

When Panel Replacement is Actually Needed

Panel replacement is genuinely needed when:

• Physical damage: The screen is cracked from an impact (ball hit it, child threw something, TV fell). You can usually see the crack lines.
• Permanent lines: Vertical or horizontal coloured lines that do not go away. These are caused by failed connections within the panel itself.
• Large dead zones: Big sections of the screen that show no picture while the rest works. This indicates internal panel failure.
• Bleeding or dark patches: Large uneven dark areas or light bleeding from the edges that keep growing over time.

If you see any of these, panel replacement is the right solution. Even then, it is much cheaper than buying a whole new TV. For a 43-inch TV, expect to pay Rs 4,000–6,000 for panel replacement instead of Rs 25,000+ for a new TV.

Common Misdiagnosis We See

1. "Panel gone" when it is backlight: The most common one. Dark screen with sound is almost always backlight, not panel. Save Rs 3,000–5,000 by getting it properly checked.
2. "Panel gone" when it is motherboard: If the TV shows no picture AND no sound, it could be a motherboard issue (Rs 1,500–3,500), not a panel problem.
3. "Need new TV" when it is power supply: TV not turning on at all? It might just be a Rs 800 power supply repair, not the end of your TV.
